Commander modules time out the high amperage to the solenoid coil to protect the solenoid. Solenoid failure is often a symptom of deteriorating factors of the electrical or mechanical system in an application. Commander modules can prevent this type of solenoid failure and increase the durability of your solenoid and overall reliability of your system.

There are 2 choices to make and 4 different solutions to choose from. Either a small separately mounted module or a Coil Commander (tube) that mounts inline with your wiring. Further, there is the option to choose for a solid-state or a relay-style version. The solid-state version is better suited for high vibration environments but has a higher insertion loss and lower cycle rate. The relay-style version is more cost-effective, better suited for high cycle rates and has a lower insertion loss, however, is less able to withstand high vibration. There's a large variety of wiring and terminations styles available.
During the initial energizing and pulling in the plunger, solenoids need to perform at their maximum force. After energizing and pulling in the plunger, significantly less power is needed to maintain the plunger energized position. Most solenoids have a bi-coil installed to enhance the maximum pull and guarantee continuous hold performance. For these dual coil solenoids without autonomous switch, the high current coil section must be switched off to prevent heat building up and put an unnecessarily high load on the electrical system. Some solenoids have a single coil, and do not require the pull coil to be disconnected, but can accept reducing of the input voltage. Commander modules either switch the solenoid pull coil off, or reduce the input voltage after between 0,5 to 2 seconds. Whether it is a single or bi-coil design, it is of utmost importance the internal coil(s) and the rest of the system is protected from continuous high current draw due to over cranking, misalignment or misadjustment of linkage, abuse or other malfunction of engine or application electrical systems parts.
